Pyrite is also known as “Fools Gold” and is the brassy gold mineral that frustrated so many miners during the gold rush of the Old West. The word Pyrite comes from Greek “pyrites lithos” which means “stone that strikes fire” and was given this name because the ancient Greeks determined that Pyrite would produce sparks when struck with iron. Because of this Pyrite is often used as a fire starter similar to flint. Some Native American groups created mirrors out of Pyrite and believed that by gazing into the mirror they could see the future.
