Description
This listing is for a polished Orthoceras fossil. You will receive one specimen similar to the ones pictured. The fossils range in length between 1" to 2" (2.5cm to 5cm). Each one is special and unique!
Orthoceras are extinct members of the Cephalpods that lived between 259 and 488 million years ago. The word “Ortoceras” means “straight horn”. The modern “Nautilus” is closely related to the Orthoceras, however the straight shell has developed into the Nautilus’s coiled one. The Squid and Octopus are also modern evolutions that came from the Orthoceras. Orthoceras were subject to two
distinctly separate extinctions. The first was was during the Ordovician period in the Triassic era, 488 to 443 million years ago. The second and final extinction during the Devonian period of the Peleozoic era, 416 to 359 million years ago.
Orthoceras specimens are found in many parts of the world which indicates how widespread their populations were when they thrived across the worlds oceans. In Morocco, large areas of ancient seabeds show huge quantities of Orthoceras fossil specimens, often layered metres deep, which suggest that the last extinction of the species was catastrophic and complete.
Revered by many cultures for centuries, Fossils, because of their age, are often used as talismans for protection and long life. They are links to the past and, as such, can be helpful for past-life visualization, astral travel and increased knowledge of ancient ways. Fossils are associated with the earth element, which can heighten one’s intuition, especially when learning about crystals.
