Prayer Malas are used as a spiritual tool with reciting mantras and meditation. The Guru bead is the central bead where the strand meets; often unique from the other stones, the Guru bead should not be used while reciting. Once you’ve done one rotation, turn back from the Guru bead and continue from there.
The traditional way to use a mala while meditating is to run it through your fingers with your thumb and middle finger, not to use your index finger at all. Malas beads can also be worn and kept with you to keep the metaphysical properties of the stones or wood with you throughout the day as a reminder of your mantras, and to keep you grounded and protected.
